Behind the Scenes

The original moral of this episode was to be, "Easy is the path to wisdom for those not blinded by ego."

When told to launch the ion cannons after Matchstick's death, the battle droid delivers the classic Star Wars line, "I have a bad feeling about this."

When Matchstick tells Plo Koon that the damage to his ship is "just a scratch", he is wearing a regular Shadow Squadron helmet, and not his custom painted one. A moment later he is wearing his regular customized helmet again.

Twice when the ion cannon is fired, the camera shows a close up of the inner section firing the blast. Both screens are an homage to the Death Star firing sequence, where instead of droids there are Imperial technicians.

RISING MALEVOLENCE

Previous Episode: Ambush

Following Episode: Shadow of Malevolence

Location in STAR WARS Timeline: 22BBY – After battle of Christophsis (due to the presence of Ashoka Tano). Part 1 of 3 part story arc.

Moral: "Belief is not a matter of choice, but of conviction."

News Reel

The clone starfleet is under siege!
Dozens of Republic warships have
been destroyed in merciless surprise
attacks that leave no survivors.
Rumors spread of a terrible new
Separatist weapon.

In the face of growing fear, the
Jedi Council sends Master Plo Koon to
hunt down the menace before
it strikes again....

Official Description

Creating panic throughout the galaxy, a devastating Separatist mystery weapon terrorizes the clone Starfleet. Anakin and Ahsoka race to save Jedi Master Plo Koon and his clone troopers in time. Jedi Master Plo Koon and his squad barely survive an attack from a mysterious Separatist warship called the Malevolence. Can they stay alive long enough for Anakin and Ahsoka to find them?

My Explanation

This episode starts out with Jedi Master Plo Koon in search of the new Separatist secret weapon. This episode is the first time you get to hear Plo Koon speak. He has appeared in all three prequel films and has never spoken. It is really cool to see the creators of the clone wars elaborate on these characters that we have only seen in the background, and never gotten the full story on them.
The separatist secret weapon is a huge ship called the Malevolence. This ship is equipped with an ion cannon on both sides of its hull, which is capable of disabling all power to ships caught within its blast. Plo Koon engages General Grievous “behind the wheel” of the Malevolence, only to have all three of his republic cruisers disabled and destroyed by the ion cannon. Master Koon and a few clone troopers escape in an escape pod, where they wait for someone to come looking for them. They have limited power and life support systems in the pod and they will not last long. Meanwhile, on the Malevolence, General Grievous dispatches pod hunter ships to find the republic escape pods and destroy them to keep the details of this secret weapon a secret. Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Ashoka, the last people to hear from Master Koon, disobey the Jedi council and leave their fleet convoy to look for survivors. We learn a bit of back-story about Ashoka as they search. Master Plo Koon was the one who found Ashoka and brought her to the Jedi temple to be trained as a Jedi. She has a strong connection with him and eventually senses his presence in his escape pod. While waiting for rescue, Plo Koon and his clones witness the pod hunters cut open another pod to let clones get sucked out into space. They are then spotted and the pod hunter proceeds to them next. Plo Koon and two clone troopers go outside the pod into space to fight off the attack. This is the first time it is confirmed that a clone trooper (or storm trooper) can survive in his suit in space. This scene also shows that Plo Koon can withstand the pressure of space without any space suit of any kind. He does have a breather mask that his species, the Kel Dor, need to breath away from their planet, Dorin. This same breather mask must aid in his survival in space. The Jedi master and the clones destroy the pod hunter and are soon rescued by Anakin and Ashoka. Alerted to the destruction of the pod hunter, General Grievous investigates, to find our heroes trying to escape. He launches the ion cannon at Anakin’s ship, The Twilight. Anakin shows off his amazing piloting talents by evading this huge ion blast through a field of debris and at the last moment escapes to hyperspace, along with the knowledge of the Separatist secret weapon. They return master Koon to the fleet and have to give their report to the Jedi council. Although they disobeyed the council to go look for survivors, they uncovered the truth of the mystery weapon and saved a leading member of the Jedi council. This episode is the first in a three part story arc about the malevolence. Many episodes in The Clone Wars are part of two or three parts. This is supposed to be in the style of the old 1930's cereals. This is also the style of the Star Wars films. Every episode is an adventure that gets wrapped up, never with a cliffhanger, although there may be a bigger picture that has not yet been resolved. There is a plot to each season, each story arc within that season, and each episode within each arc. So although, the heros in this episode get away, and unravel the mystery of the secret weapon, this weapon is still at large, and will have to be dealt with in an upcoming episode. I have read that it is even possible that some story arcs that have aired and thought to have been complete may have un-aired missing chapters for us to look forward to.

What’s New

In this episode is the first time you see Plo Koon in action as well as hear him speak. Many of his lines in the episode are very wise of a Jedi master. He reminds me of Gandalph the Grey from lord of the rings.

We see that clones in their armor and also Plo Koon’s species (Kel Dor) can survive in space for a limited time.

General Grievous also makes his first appearance in the clone wars in this episode. Very little is known about him since he appears and is destroyed in Episode III. It will be interesting to learn some back story on this villain.

What’s Old
The escape pod in this episode is the same that is used by the droids in Episode IV. These escape pods are very common in The Clone wars.
The medical droid aboard Anakins ship, The Twilight, is the same style of Medical Droid that appears in Episode V.

Behind the Scenes

Pod 1977 was named for the release year of the original Star Wars.

The Clone Wars Blog - S01E01 AMBUSH

The Clone Wars Blog

Season 1 / Episode 1

AMBUSH

Previous Episode: - / -

Following Episode: Rising Malevolence

Location in STAR WARS Timeline: UNKNOWN (22BBY)

Moral: "Great leaders inspire greatness in others."

News Reel

A galaxy divided by war! Peaceful
worlds must choose sides or face
the threat of invasion. Republic
and Separatist armies vie for the
allegiance of neutral planets.

Desperate to build
a Republic supply base on the
system of Toydaria, Jedi Master Yoda
travels to secret negotiations on a
remote neutral moon....

Official Description

Jedi Master Yoda is on a secret mission to forge a treaty with the King of the strategic system of Toydaria when his ship is ambushed by Count Dooku. Yoda and three clone troopers must face off against Count Dooku's dreaded assassin Ventress and her massive droid army to prove the Jedi are strong enough to protect the king and his people from the forces of the war.

My Explanation

The first episode of The Clone Wars Series kicks off with an exciting adventure with Master Yoda. The episode is about Yoda meeting the monarch of Toydaria on a neutral moon to recruit his planet to the Republic war effort, and of course, the Sith have sent their agent, Asajj Ventress to the meeting as well. Representing the Confederacy of Independent systems (the separatists), Ventress claims her droid army can protect the king and his world better than the Republic's clone army. Yoda’s ship is attacked by Ventress' forces before he reaches the planet and he is force to evacuate to an escape pod. Some pods are destroyed while trying to escape, while Yoda’s pod is somehow missed. I have a theory about this, but it is not backed up officially. I speculate that during this scene, Yoda could be using the force, or a force power called “Battle Meditation” to avoid being hit by the lasers being shot at his escape pod.
Once they crash land on the planet, Yoda and three Clone Troops set out of foot to meet The Toydarian King. Throughout the episode they are attacked by waves of enemies and Yoda dispatches them effortlessly. One clone is injured, and eventually they rest in a cave. During this scene, Yoda’s theme music from Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) plays, as Yoda reinforces the idea in The Clone wars series that although the clones are all the same man, they are different in the force and their lives do matter to the Jedi. He passes on words of wisdom to each of their clones and goes over their strengths to build their confidence. One clone in particular, Commander Thire, gets some meaningful advice. Yoda tells him that the War is long, and the only way to be successful is to survive it. This has extra meaning because Clone Commander Thire does in fact survive the Clone Wars (maybe because of Yoda’s wise words), and goes onto be an Imperial Stormtrooper. Thire also appears in Episode III as a Shock Trooper and can be seen searching for Yoda in the senate building as well as helping the self apponted, Emperor Palpatine retrieve Darth Vader’s body from the lava fields of Mustafar.
After the heroes rest, they set out once more and encounter more enemies. Yoda is eventually outnumbered by Destroyer Droids, and the clones use Yoda's advise to “out think” the droids. They save Yoda by shooting a rocket into a rock face and burying the droid force. They then go on to the meeting where they save the King of Toydaria from being assassinated by Ventress. Yoda easily overpowers the Sith Assassin and uses the force to disarm her. She uses an explosion as a distraction to flee. The episode ends with Toydaria joining the Republics cause because of the Honor and Valor displayed by the Jedi master.

What’s New

The unnamed moon that the episode takes place on is a new world to the Star Wars universe. It is covered in giant coral. It looks as if this world was once covered in water and has since dried up.

This is also the first appearance of a Toydarian aside from Watto in Episodes I and II. They also show these Toydarians to be much more respectable and honor driven than the slave owning junk dealer.
This is the first and only time to date that we see Yoda use his lightsaber in this series. Yoda fighting is still a novel thing to see since, we only got a taste of his warrior skills in the films. It is also the first time that you see Yoda fight droids. He was never seen in the films fighting battle droids. So you can really see him let loose on these non-sentient beings.

What’s Old

In this episode we see a Corrillian Blockade runner like the one in the opening scene of Episode IV (the tantive IV) as Yoda’s ship to the meeting. We also the escape pods like those in the Classic films in this episode although they appear more frequently in future clone wars episodes.
The music playing during the cave scene, is yodas theme from episode V. This shows a parallel between him giving words of wisdom to the clones, as he does to Luke on Dagobah about the force.

Behind the Scenes

The episode's original name was "Ambush in the Outer Rim."

The original moral of this episode was supposed to be, "Great leadership comes in all sizes."

"Ambush" was originally not supposed to be aired as the first episode of Season One, but the episodes' order was changed very close to the series' premiere.

Addicted to Audiobooks

Addicted to Audiobooks

Since I have been commuting to my new job in Coquitlam, I have spent the two hours a day driving listening to various novels in audio form (audiobooks); I just download them and load them onto my cell phone, iPod or burn to a CD. Burning to a CD is nice because you can listen to the book through your car speakers, and you can avoid using headphones. The downside to using CD’s is you can “burn” through you writable CDs very fast this way (as I learned when listeneing to the Star Wars: Legacy series where each book took up 2 - 3 CDs each). This is an awesome way to spend the time a day you drive if you commute, especially if you don’t have time or the patience to read at home. Furthermore; I find that you take in the story when it is read to you as apposed to reading, when you can easily get distracted and sidetracked in your own thoughts. Since April I have listened to the following books:

Mace Windu Lives

Mace Windu Lives

Have we ever seen a Jedi knight, survive losing a limb? Withstand Sith lighting? Land safely after falling great heights? Of course we have, in many different instances. So why would the supposed “death” of Jedi Master Mace Windu be an exception. Even though he lost a hand, was subjected to deadly force lighting and force pushed out of a Coruscant window to fall to his death. I think that i can prove that he did in fact, live.

In Episode II: Attack of the clones, we see Padawan learner Anakin Skywalker, jump from a speeder to free fall through the Coruscant sky lanes to surprise a fleeing fugitive. Anakin used the force to control his movement while free falling. This did not look like a challenge to the mere apprentice, and I don’t think it would be a challenge for any other Jedi Knight, let alone a Jedi Master. Why this would not be the case for the Jedi Master, Mace Windu – I have no idea. Even with the excrutiating pain of losing a hand, I don’t think Master Windu would have any problem finding somewhere to land, even if it was a rough landing somewhere in the many kilometer fall to the Coruscant undercity. We also see in both The Clone Wars animated TV series (2005), as well as The Clone Wars Computer Animated Series (2009), that any adventure where Mace Windu is present, Gravity and heights never seems to be an obstacle for Mace Windu – in fact it seems that defying gravity would be one of his specialties, as they constantly show him using the force to propel himself high into the air, only to land again with ease and no injury. For example: During the battle of Dantooine he force leaped great lengths to stop a Seismic Tank. During the battle of Corescant he commandeered a droid fighter mid flight by dropping on top of it. What if he had missed his target? He would have had to have landed – in the same circumstances and that of his assumed death. Even in Episode II at the battle of Geonosis he is shown evading Jango Fett's flame thrower by falling from the coliseum balcony with ease. Yes, the distance of the fall is small compared to the free fall of Coruscant, but they show him falling un-survivable distances more than enough in the Star Wars saga to prove that heights are no danger to Windu. Finally, in the Clone wars TV series (2009) we see Anakin Skywalker and his padawan Ashoka “skydive” to the top of a secret confederacy listening post. While the accompanying clones have to use jet packs to slow their decent for landing, the Jedi use the force to slow their fall right before impact to land safely. This proves once more that even an apprentice can use the force to land a great fall. Even the hastily trained Luke Skywalker was able to fall and cling to the underside of cloud city on Bespin, with the loss of his hand after his dual with Darth Vader. I don’t think that a lost hand would hinder Mace Windu from landing safely after his fall. After all “Trials of the flesh” is a common and acceptable Jedi trial to achieve the rank of Jedi Knight. The only way Mace would not be able to survive the fall is if he was killed by the Sith lightning from Darth Sidious (Chancellor Palpatine) before he was cast out of the window and to the depths below.

So, Could Jedi Master Mace Windu withstand the few seconds of Sith lighting before he was force pushed out of the window to fall to his “death”? I don’t see why not? After all Luke Skywalker withstood Sith lighting from the emperors hand for much longer than Mace did. When Luke’s torture was over, his body smoked from the electrocution. Where as the burst that Mace Windu received was no where near as long or as powerful as what Luke had endured. Some say that Palpatine used all his strength in the force to attack Mace Windu with Sith lightening and thats what killed him, but as we saw just prior to this, he had weakened himself sending the lighting at mace only to have it deflected back at him with Windu’s rare purple blade. He used so much of his power then that it deformed him beyond recognition. So in fact he was most likely at his weakest when he executed his last stand and used his last bit of energy to use Sith lighting on Windu before casting him out. After all, neither Mace nor Luke was deformed after their encounter with the deadly Sith lighting. That would only mean that Palpatine received the most damage when it was deflected back at him. When Luke Skywalker was tortured by Sith lightning on the second death star in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, the Sith emperor was in fact torturing him, making his death long and painful, but at the time his power would have been at an optimal stage. Since Palpatine had now been an overt Sith Master for going on twenty three years, I would think his Sith powers would have never been so deadly; therefore, I have no doubt that Luke withstood much worse than Mace Windu did. This proving with little doubt, that there is no way Mace could have been killed from the weak blast of Sith lighting, in 19 BBY (19 years before the battle of Yavin (Episode IV: A New Hope)), at the time of his supposed death.

In conclusion, I have no doubt that Mace Windu survived the encounter with the Sith Master, Darth Sideous. As the acting Master of the order until the battle of Geonosis in 22 BBY. I believe there is no way that he could have been killed, at the age of 53, he was one of the most powerful Jedi of his generation, and in the history of the Jedi. There are many Star Wars stories still to be told, and I strongly believe, the story of Jedi Master Mace Windu is far from over. With this as evidence, I would watch for a story of a Mace Windu in hiding, hunting down and confronting Darth Vader and his master, with the mission to destroy the Sith and restore the Jedi order.
