Official Description

Creating panic throughout the galaxy, a devastating Separatist mystery weapon terrorizes the clone Starfleet. Anakin and Ahsoka race to save Jedi Master Plo Koon and his clone troopers in time. Jedi Master Plo Koon and his squad barely survive an attack from a mysterious Separatist warship called the Malevolence. Can they stay alive long enough for Anakin and Ahsoka to find them?

My Explanation

This episode starts out with Jedi Master Plo Koon in search of the new Separatist secret weapon. This episode is the first time you get to hear Plo Koon speak. He has appeared in all three prequel films and has never spoken. It is really cool to see the creators of the clone wars elaborate on these characters that we have only seen in the background, and never gotten the full story on them.
The separatist secret weapon is a huge ship called the Malevolence. This ship is equipped with an ion cannon on both sides of its hull, which is capable of disabling all power to ships caught within its blast. Plo Koon engages General Grievous “behind the wheel” of the Malevolence, only to have all three of his republic cruisers disabled and destroyed by the ion cannon. Master Koon and a few clone troopers escape in an escape pod, where they wait for someone to come looking for them. They have limited power and life support systems in the pod and they will not last long. Meanwhile, on the Malevolence, General Grievous dispatches pod hunter ships to find the republic escape pods and destroy them to keep the details of this secret weapon a secret. Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Ashoka, the last people to hear from Master Koon, disobey the Jedi council and leave their fleet convoy to look for survivors. We learn a bit of back-story about Ashoka as they search. Master Plo Koon was the one who found Ashoka and brought her to the Jedi temple to be trained as a Jedi. She has a strong connection with him and eventually senses his presence in his escape pod. While waiting for rescue, Plo Koon and his clones witness the pod hunters cut open another pod to let clones get sucked out into space. They are then spotted and the pod hunter proceeds to them next. Plo Koon and two clone troopers go outside the pod into space to fight off the attack. This is the first time it is confirmed that a clone trooper (or storm trooper) can survive in his suit in space. This scene also shows that Plo Koon can withstand the pressure of space without any space suit of any kind. He does have a breather mask that his species, the Kel Dor, need to breath away from their planet, Dorin. This same breather mask must aid in his survival in space. The Jedi master and the clones destroy the pod hunter and are soon rescued by Anakin and Ashoka. Alerted to the destruction of the pod hunter, General Grievous investigates, to find our heroes trying to escape. He launches the ion cannon at Anakin’s ship, The Twilight. Anakin shows off his amazing piloting talents by evading this huge ion blast through a field of debris and at the last moment escapes to hyperspace, along with the knowledge of the Separatist secret weapon. They return master Koon to the fleet and have to give their report to the Jedi council. Although they disobeyed the council to go look for survivors, they uncovered the truth of the mystery weapon and saved a leading member of the Jedi council. This episode is the first in a three part story arc about the malevolence. Many episodes in The Clone Wars are part of two or three parts. This is supposed to be in the style of the old 1930's cereals. This is also the style of the Star Wars films. Every episode is an adventure that gets wrapped up, never with a cliffhanger, although there may be a bigger picture that has not yet been resolved. There is a plot to each season, each story arc within that season, and each episode within each arc. So although, the heros in this episode get away, and unravel the mystery of the secret weapon, this weapon is still at large, and will have to be dealt with in an upcoming episode. I have read that it is even possible that some story arcs that have aired and thought to have been complete may have un-aired missing chapters for us to look forward to.

What’s New

In this episode is the first time you see Plo Koon in action as well as hear him speak. Many of his lines in the episode are very wise of a Jedi master. He reminds me of Gandalph the Grey from lord of the rings.

We see that clones in their armor and also Plo Koon’s species (Kel Dor) can survive in space for a limited time.

General Grievous also makes his first appearance in the clone wars in this episode. Very little is known about him since he appears and is destroyed in Episode III. It will be interesting to learn some back story on this villain.

What’s Old
The escape pod in this episode is the same that is used by the droids in Episode IV. These escape pods are very common in The Clone wars.
The medical droid aboard Anakins ship, The Twilight, is the same style of Medical Droid that appears in Episode V.

Behind the Scenes

Pod 1977 was named for the release year of the original Star Wars.
